1992

January 20 – A state district judge rules that the Texas higher education system discriminates against UTEP and other border institutions when it comes to funding. The case is known as League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), et al. v. Ann Richards, et al. [BR]

1996

January 23 – Basketball coach Don Haskins undergoes bypass surgery after suffering a minor heart attack during a basket game. Haskins would continue to coach the Miners for another three years. [Pros.]

1999

November 11 – Pursuant to the their Rules and Regulations, the UT Board of Regents’ approve new logos, seals, and a mascot for U. T. El Paso that feature the soon-to-be trademarked logo of a miner’s pick representing the “T” in UTEP. This is also the first official recognition of the abbreviation “UTEP” by the UT System, even though the school and the media had used it unofficially since 1967. [BR]
